Dogs don't quite understand the notion of time - they only understand "now", "never", and "forever".

Examples:
* You are petting me NOW and it will last FOREVER.
* You are home NOW, but if you leave your will NEVER come back.

No wonder they claim the dog is your best friend - look at the big party they make you every time you come back home. It's like they haven't seen you in years, and NOW you have finally back. Even if you were out for 5 minutes to pick up the newspaper. After all, they thought you would NEVER come back.
