~Sexy China Dress~

Here I have explored several of the new Poser Pro 2014 features:

* Fitting Room: converted the cheongsam dress from Vicky3 to AnimeDoll.
* Morph Tool: much more usable now. Helped fitting the dress after conversion.
* Comic Book Toon mode: improves default toon mode. Also used in the B/W thumbnail.
* Bullet Physics: animated the hair with softbody dynamics!
* Cloth Room: a little faster in this version. Animated the dress.

There is an obvious lack of control when painting weight maps in the new Fitting Room, where you can select body groups but not material zones. Therefore painting weights over hard or soft features goes down to vertex hunting with a brush - impossible to do right. In addition, cloth fitting collides with the figure but not with itself. The overlapping cloth layers on the chest poke through all over, and there is nothing to prevent that. As a consequence, the dress details get destroyed in the smoothing phase - but thanks to toon mode that doesn't show here! I have also fixed the pokethrus in 3DSMAX, but maybe I could had done it with the new morph took in Poser itself. ^^

Painting weight maps on the hair takes a lot of trial and error, but the "live simulation" mode makes it easy to visualize how the weight maps affect the geometry in real time - awesomeness!

There are 3 simulations running in this animation: the hair back, hair locks, and dress. I tried softbody physics with the dress, but it doesn't pay off - the Bullet engine is too slow for cloth simulations when the collision objects are animated because it has to recreate all collision objects in every frame. Nonetheless, I am not convinced this doesn't work because I have seen Bullet simulating cloth in real-time in MMD (Miku Miku Dance). I just have to figure out how it was done. Or maybe some Bullet functionality used in MMD is missing in Poser?

Figure is AnimeDoll. Hope you like it and thanks for coming by!

It's an old one for Vicky3, probably the only one. ^^

Was it dynamic already, or did you convert it? And how did you handle the frog buttons?

It was a standard conforming piece, and I didn't convert it. I just simulated the hip part, since the rest of the dress was already fine as it was. To keep buttons in place, just add them to the choreographed rigid group in the cloth room, and they will stay together with the dress while preserving their shape. Without this, they would just fall to the ground. ^_____^

Thank you! I have spent many hours fiddling with the cloth and hair dynamics until they came out at least close to what I wanted. ^^

MMD doesn't have any softbody collision as far as I know. It's all rigid body collision. Hair and clothes are rigged with a skeletal structure (think of cloth handles) and then ran through a rigid body simulation.

Wow are you sure? That would make sense - in my tests the Bullet engine is not capable to doing that in real-time when colliding against a bone-rigged figure. It becomes many times slower than Poser cloth simulations, so it's not worth it. Softbody collisions are real-time but the precision is very low, it pokes thru very easily. I suppose it's a trade between speed and precision. Bullet offers an option for better collision, but they warn there will be a performance penalty (aka slow). ^^

All things considered, I am very happy with the results. I just wish we could select material zones in the Fitting Room. It's almost impossible to select buttons, pockets and zippers with a brush because it also selects everything in the way.

Well, Bullet was made as a gaming physics engine, so I would hope that it's capable of something as simple as bone on bone rigid body collision. There's a good chance that Poser's implementation isn't perfect.

It might do bone-based physics, but I don't know how that one in particular would work with Bullet in Poser. What I tried here was to use softbody dynamics to animate the dress as it collides with the animated figure, but to do that, Bullet has to recreate the collision shells all over again for every frame, and for all involved body parts, which makes it impractical. So it will not replace the Cloth Room anytime soon, which is what I was trying to verify.

So you say MMD uses Bullet physics on ghost bones? As far as I know, that would involve some sort of ragdoll physics, but Bullet in Poser doesn't implement that kind of functionality. It does implement hardbody physics, which include links and hinges. Maybe that could be used for this purpose, but I am not sure how. ^^

It's a program to work with 3D human figures. Not only human, but mostly. Everything in my gallery was made with it, to include this one. ^^
