~Summer Sunset~

Warm tropical islands can be both quiet and relaxing, as well as a bit surprising at times. It's hot and sunny around the year, with some occasional tropical storms. Sitting at the beach to enjoy the warm salty water during sunset can be quite an experience. ^_^

This is my "Summer" entry for the "Seasons of 3D" constest! :D

Thanks for coming by!

* Characters composed in Poser.
* Scene and characters were composited, lighted and rendered in Vue.
* Postwork in Paintshop Pro.

Thank you! I think you might be the 1st one to notice the WWII German fighter plane buried there in the background sands almost 2 years after I posted the pic. There is also a shark if you look close. :XD: Don't miss the winter version of the same location and characters! --> [link] ^______^

Yep that one happens to be one of my favourite fighters of WWII .. How come you put it there? I'm just curious. What's the idea/concept behind it, or is it just random? Did you model the plane yourself too?

The reason I used a German antique plane in the scene was because Japan and Germany were allies during WWII and still to this very date Japan is quite influenced by Germany. In other words, Anime quite often has heavy dosages of German culture and language embedded into the story and visuals, even when most people won't really notice it. The plane was to symbolize that influence in a rather unusual way. I saw this shot down plane in the middle of the streets in Paris (France), where they made it something like a WWII trophy or monument, preserving it exactly where it fell back in the war time (it's along story). ^^

It's amazing. I really like the reflections in the water, their expressions, and the wrecked plane in the back adds a nice touch.

i think you need better renders...you might want to consider global illumination lighting setups with mental ray or something like that.the models are good but the lighting does not do justice to them;)(sorry for my bad english)
they have to be more "realistic", more believable:)

I know what you mean, but you have to consider I am using a rather cheap renderer here. Switching on radiosity or GI here blows a 2 minutes render into a 2 days render, and considering those are cartoonish Anime girls, sometimes the effort backfires on me.

For example, I once used GI when rendering an Anime character in a realistic background, and people complained she looked pretty odd and out of place, mostly because the Anime and realistic styles clashed together. Ever since I understood that realism and Anime styles must be used in careful dosages. ^^

you know, i thought that you might say that realism and anime don't fit together, but when i said you need global illumination i was thinking about giving the models some volume, some mass, with the help of lighting.i dont know much about anime but i saw that 3d movie, "final fantasy" (NOT spirits within) that had anime characters AND realistic rendering.it is my favourite 3d movie:)...although i dont remember it's full name:confused:
anyway, about the amount of time that global illumination needs, there are ways around that, and a 2 minute render can be made a realistic render in about 2 hours wich is not much.

In my experience, GI can increase level of realism in a scene to a point where people find it odd because the characters are cartoonish. In the case of the "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" movie, the art directors took months to come up with Anime figures that looks realistic but only up to a point. They wanted to avoid the "uncanny valley" effect ([link]) that caused "Spirits Within" to fail in sales.

When it comes to my Anime renders, the use of GI requires some more advanced used of lights and I don't seem to have the proper skills to fully take advantage of it. Whenever I tried to use it, my scenes ended up excessively dark for some reason. As an alternative, I have used "Global Ambience" instead, which roughly simulates radiosity but with a fraction of the rendering time.

the realism in advent children is a composite of models, textures, lighting and animation that are all conceived with that realistic scope.someone told me that the models are not really anime but realistic with some anime touches, like the hairstyles, the clothes, and some other body features/io dont know if this is true, i dont know the distinctive features of anime.i followed your link about uncanny valley effect, but i am not very impressed, as that effect appears in photorealistic 3d movies, while i am only talking about realistic rendering at a lower level (like clay rendering).in fact i dont really understand the uncanny effect because:most people cannot be fooled into thinking that a 3d animation is a real movie, they usually know that before or just realise it while watching; because i know that it is in fact 3d, i dont feel strange when i see something photorealistic, i am just amazed with the level of realism.i understand the effect appearing in real movies,like "i,robot" but that is just the contrast with the real thing..like humans and stuff, because, well, it's the real thing..
anyway, i dont think you have to bother with that "uncanny effect" stuff, it is always a good ideea to make your scenes more realistic, even though the final render will be cartoonish.

...
if you use 3ds max, clay rendering is the use of a skylight with scanline renderer/advanced lighting/light-tracer everything left with the default settings.if you dont know it you should try it:)it takes very little time.

That's exacly how I thought before, and I was trying to get more realism in every new render... until people started complaining all over it. ;p

well i complain now for the lack of realism;)
in fact i dont say you need photorealistic or even realistic renderings, i just say that you need some lights in your scene, with some cast shadows, so that the models dont appear to be floating around, and also some textures that do not look like plastic.as for global illumination, it helps to "ground" the characters much more, maybe radiosity is too much but clay rendering sure helps a lot.i browsed your gallery and ,every time, i had that strange feeling that something is missing:(

Oh, I bet I know what you mean about the lighting! :XD: My major rendering tool is Poser, which is known for being 20 years behind in technology and two of the major flaws are: lighting (very poor shadows) and materials (tend to look like plastic). Poser is now over 10 years old and version 7 is coming out later this year, but all those things have never been fixed, maybe because the program was not originally designed for rendering, not to mention it's in the ranges of $250 bucks and we can't expect much from it.

The girls are so sexy!

How did you make this drawing?
How many time did you take to draw it?
Which software did you use to make it?

So, one more in my favorites! ^^

Thank you, glad you liked this. It was my 2nd experiment with water effects. :XD: A pic like this is created in two steps: first the characters in Poser and then compositing then with the background in Vue or other other Poser-compatible application. Then you add the water and other elements, create the lighting, materials, and finally postwork in PaintShop or whatever you use for painting. As you can see, this is a 3D + 2D process that may take anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days. ^^
