If you'd like to get started with 3D for free, you can try DAZ Studio (from daz3d.com). If you'd like to invest on Poser (my main tool), SmithMicroSoftware.com has different versions for different budgets. I also have a big tutorial on how to get started with Poser at my frontpage. ^^
